Daily we were presented with a
quote and series of questions to ponder for the day. Here is the quote by Charles
Sheffield, Brother to Dragons for day seven, our last day of service.
“Remember, an easy question can have an easy
answer. But a hard question must have a hard answer. And for the hardest
questions of all, there may be no answer – except faith.”
What a wise statement as we of
privilege in the USA see the answer to the state of people in Guatemala, other
3rd world countries, and even in our own backyards as an easy answer
to be solved by money or imparting our way of life on them. Personally, I feel
that we need to take some of their ways of life and impart it on ourselves. The
basis of life and humanity should be taught foremost. How do we conserve
energy, water, food? It is not all about making the most energy efficient
appliance, but also how do we use the appliances less. It is about not taking hour
long, extremely hot showers as I am guilty of at times myself. It is eating
what we need, not overeating and throwing large amounts of food away. We need
to learn how to portion our purchases and filling our plate.
**Challenge this Thanksgiving to
put only on your plate what you can eat. Always remember, you can usually go
back for seconds or thirds if necessary, but once the food is on your plate it
is really hard for that to be shared with someone else.
It is about use & reuse, which I
also addressed in the Compartiendo
con el Pueblo post, not using styrofoam or plastic bottles that just litter
our world with garbage. Yes, we have recycling but can we have products that
are even better for recycling. What are the effects of breaking down and
recycling various products? Can we recycle glass bottles with less
environmental and energy expense? How can items seen as trash be used in place
of something new? For example, plastic grocery bags as trash bags, instead of
purchasing actual trash bags. Behind the school, we found use of plastic coke bottles to assist in building a wall and benches around a tree. Do you have any
other ideas?
As individuals in this world our
goal is not to make everyone like us but be Christ’s light and help everyone
have their human dignity. This requires and understanding of whom people are,
their culture, their way of life, and find was to make a difference preserving
the dignity of the life, humanity, and culture. Not everyone needs AC to
survive, it is a nice luxury; Actually, the one thing I was looking forward to
being back home was to not have the AC blowing on me all night as I slept.
