The
following are a few of the projects in which St. Michael in Jeffersontown and
Meade County Catholic Youth Ministries are supporting down in Zacapa,
Guatemala.
House for Carlito
During our
July trip to Guatemala, we met a little boy named Carlito who was born with
spina bifida. Though wheelchair bound, his spirit immediately caught the
attention the group and so we are working to build him and his family a house. Currently,
they live in a 10 foot by 10 foot mud hut with plastic for one of the walls.
(There are six of them in his family mind you). We would like to work together
to build them a new home that would have concrete
floors and cinder block walls. The cost is going to be right around $4,000. *Still fundraising
Pueblo Modelo Well & School Rooms
One
community which the group was involved was Pueblo Modelo. There we created wood
walls to separate current classrooms into two to accommodate the growing need
of additional classroom space. The creation of the room separator was great,
but the walls only created a barrier with no separate access to the second room.
We were able to raise the $500 per door to build an external entrance to these
new classrooms.
Secondly,
the community members were in need of access to water. The start of a well on
community land was started before we left but funds were still needed to build
the walls of the well and to purchase and install the pump and piping to
provide the community water. Thanks to the St. Michael & Meade County
communities, we were able to also raise the appropriate funds for this project
as well.
Arts in Motion
A
high school student from St. Michael’s like the Music in Motion program
sponsored by HIM in Gualan and would love to start a similar program for the
arts, Arts in Motion. She seeks to raise funds to help endow the program to
support a coordinator/teacher for the program and supplies.
On
December 27, 2014, a small adult group from St. Michael heads out for week in
Guatemala. We look to possibly work on Carlito’s house as well as building
chicken coops in the community of Pueblo Modelo. Though we are open to whatever the needs of the area are when we arrive in late December.
Interested in joining us, check out more information here. Yes, I am looking forward to being part of this group and seeing the progress in the Pueblo Modelo community since our departure in July.

youth of St. Michael look to return in the summer of 2016 as they make their biennial
trip to Guatemala.
